The East and South African-German Center of Excellence for Educational Research Methodologies and Management (CERM-ESA) Scholarships

CERM-ESA announces Two PhD SCHOLARSHIPS (up to three years) in Educational Research and Evaluation at Moi University funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) starting in September 2021

Who can apply?
The CERM-ESA PhD-scholarship program is open for candidates from East and South Africa. Successful applicants will be enrolled in the doctoral program ‘Educational Research & Evaluation’ at Moi University starting in September 2021 and will participate in CERM-ESA academic program activities (CERM-ESA International Research
Schools, research exchange visits).

CERM-ESA objectives and research topics
CERM-ESA is a joint project of Moi University, University of Oldenburg, Nelson Mandela University, Uganda Management Institute and the University of Dar es Salaam. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – with the support of the Federal Foreign Office– funds this program. CERM-ESA aims to promote and advance educational research, management and teacher education in specific African contexts through its academic, research and capacity building programs.
The scholarships include a monthly allowance, study fees as well as travel and research
allowances.

CERM-ESA focuses on the following umbrella research topics:
1) Educational research methodologies and higher education management in specific African contexts;
2) Community schools, leadership and management for social development;
3) Science education and education for sustainable development;
4) Languages, intercultural communication, indigenous knowledge and arts.

Requirements

  • a Master’s degree in Education
  • the last university degree awarded should not date back longer than six years
  • excellent previous academic results

Besides the previous academic results, candidates will be selected based on their motivation and qualification in the required subject area, the quality of their proposals and their match with one of the umbrella research areas as well as their social and political engagement. All candidates should be willing to travel and to work in an international environment.

The selection committee consists of academics of al CERM-ESA partner universities, the program coordinators and a DAAD representative. Interviews with the shortlisted candidates will be arranged in the last week of July.

  • Research proposal (5 pages): topic, background, literature review, statement of the problem, research questions, research design and methodology, theoretical framework, significance
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copies of university degrees earned and copies of your transcript of records
  • Copy of your school leaving certificate/High School diploma
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Cover letter from your employer
