RefuSHE protects, educates, and empowers young refugee women and girls in Nairobi, Kenya through a unique holistic model that provides shelter, education, case management, counseling, childcare, legal advocacy, and vocational training. RefuSHE’s holistic program meets the immediate and longer-term needs of unaccompanied, separated, and orphaned refugee girls, young women, and their children.

Founded in 2008, RefuSHE is a U.S. nonprofit with headquarters in Chicago and operations in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the first and only organization dedicated to refugee girls in Kenya. Over the past twelve years, RefuSHE has grown to become a leading institution and global thought-leader in the field of refugee protection.

Position Title: English Teacher (National)
Supervisor: Education Officer
Department: Girls Empowerment Program (GEP)
Contract Duration: One-month fixed contract

The Opportunity


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with the education curriculum objectives and keeping up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum.
  • Execute lessons efficiently using different styles of teaching depending on the content.
  • Engage students to ensure a lively classroom atmosphere.
  • Instruct students about the structure and content of the English language.
  • Teach students the spelling of words, and their meanings.
  • Emphasize the rules of composition, grammar, and sentence construction.
  • Teach students the correct pronunciation of words.
  • Maintain discipline in class. If a learner fails to attend class without notification, take necessary action and report to the Education Officer for immediate follow up.
  • Assess and record progress and prepare learners for examination. Link leaners knowledge to earlier learning and develop ways to encourage it further, and challenge and inspire learners to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding.
  • Communicate immediately to the Education Officer any challenges that affect the quality of teaching in the classroom, or hinder meeting project goals and outcomes in order that solutions are created and implemented in a timely manner.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding each participant served in all RefuSHE Kenya’s Programs.
  • Ensure effective and careful use of organization assets assigned to you to facilitate smooth undertaking of your duties.

Candidate Profile

QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES

  • KNEC P1, Diploma in Education or bachelor’s degree in Primary Education with specialization in English.
  • TSC Certified
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a teaching role.
  • Commitment to RK’s safeguarding and other policies on child protection.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiatives.
  • Ability to multitask on demanding roles and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a dynamic environment and work well in a team.
  • High confidentiality to any program documents.
  • Good command of English both oral and written.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good planning and organization skills.
  • Good working experience in MS Office suite.
