Part-time Counseling Psychologist required at HIAS Kenya

Job Summary

This rights-based approach, based on international human rights, humanitarian and refugee law and practice, provides a programming framework for HIAS’ focus on refugee protection. This framework prioritizes programming impact that ensures forcibly displaced people realize their potential and become contributors to society, with this impact being achieved through the realization of legal and civil rights and social and economic rights including through 1) the right to protection from harm, violence and discrimination, 2) the right to recovery from the shock of displacement, and 3) the right to economic self-sufficiency and inclusion.

HIAS is looking to recruit for a part time counselling psychologist who will assist in the provision of counseling interventions to vulnerable and at-risk refugee clients, including those who have undergone emotional and psychological distress as well as those with mental health challenges impairing their normal functioning.

Duration: 3-month contract.

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide individual and group counseling interventions to clients experiencing various forms of trauma while observing the highest levels of confidentiality and professional ethics and etiquette
  • Conduct psychological assessments and Mental Status Examinations; prepare and submit the reports to the Supervisor. Ensure appropriate psychosocial assessment and diagnosis of all the counselling cases are in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Atlas
  • Assess the clients’ capability to undertake and engage in self or wage employment.
  • Follow up and monitor all referral cases and provide feedback of interventions offered, by referral programs and partners.
  • Assist in preparation of timely, quality, and comprehensive reports for work done
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Competences 

  • A Degree in Counseling Psychology from a recognized university
  • Have at least 2 years of counselling experience. Experience working with refugees will be an added advantage
  • Experience in trauma counselling
  • Ideal candidate should have a keen awareness and a good knowledge of psychosocial issues and the complexities of working on these issues
  • Strong analytical and report writing skills and proven ability to conduct psychological assessments
  • Good team player with excellent cross-cultural interpersonal skills
  • Proactive and able to work under minimal supervision while exercising diplomacy, flexibility and assertiveness
  • Ability to confront and discuss sensitive issues with respect and able to uphold high standards of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Computer Applications such as MS-Access, MS-Excel and MS Word
