Position Description: Climate Finance Associate is a middle-level position and reports to Sustainability Advisory Manager. Climate Finance Associate is the cross-functional role and will work closely with staff to support the mainstreaming and development of climate finance activities and best practice across projects and programs, including through providing technical support and providing sound advice on the management of green financing options and activities, generation of funding proposals and mobilization of green finance from different financial mechanisms and instruments, to analysis and identification of low-carbon, and climate-resilient investments. This position has scope to grow into an organizational leadership role in the career path progressively.

Key Responsibilities

Sustainability Advisory Services Support

  1. Identifying opportunities for climate finance sources and resource mobilization
    Scoping technical and commercial market potential for sustainable green financing and understanding the ability for clients to access, manage, absorb climate finance.
  2. Developing a practical and operational model and tools for leveraging green finance from public funders and private financiers.
  3. Conduct portfolio assessment for investment projects in using relevant tools for Green House Gas baseline assessment, evaluate and match sources to finance requirements.
  4. Provide the team and partners with technical advice on climate finance substantial matters including strategies to guarantee that issues such as gender equality, climate risk reduction, and synergies with mitigation measures are undertaken.
  5. Support the team in the implementation of climate finance projects.
  6. Design and develop programs that enhance and mainstream climate finance in the African region.
  7. Enhancing sector understanding – support in identifying new products/ services in demand by advancing the practice areas of the SAS department.
  8. Identifying emerging trends and providing inputs on department strategy.
  9. Monitor and disseminate emerging best practices in climate finance and relevant scientific research developments.
  10. Support the preparation and delivery of training material on climate finance.

Thought Leadership and Guidance

  1. Undertaking research for a thorough understanding of banking, financial institutions, and related industry knowledge for climate investments.
  2. Development of articles, insight reports, research papers, briefings, and presentations on climate finance that provide action for climate empowerment.
  3. Organize and participate in industry webinars that disseminate and share climate finance knowledge and findings.
  4. Manage internal knowledge management resources, such as project data sheets, proposals, CVs, capability statements, reference letters, testimonials, etc.

Business Development Support

  1. Provide technical inputs in establishing and managing partnerships and networking initiatives with key players in the climate finance space.
  2. Co-create and participate in technical working groups with government institutions and other stakeholders, including the private sector.
  3. Maintain excellent relationships with key partners, and support strategies for new partner engagement.
  4. Support the BD team in the preparation of climate finance expressions of interest, concept papers, and technical proposals.
  5. Support the BD team in sourcing, monitoring, and responding to strategic opportunities.
  6. Support the BD team in technical proposal development resources, such as a consultant and partner database.
  7. Support climate finance project-related recruitment process.

Administration

  1. Maintaining timesheets for activities and work done.
  2. Ensure timely billing and collections.
  3. Ensuring compliance with company policies.
  4. Perform other related duties as requested.

Academic Qualification

  1. Master’s degree in climate change & sustainability finance, environmental and social governance, finance & investment, or a closely related field. CFA certification is preferred.
  2. Thorough understanding of incorporating environmental, social, and governance factors in the financial decision-making process.
  3. Experience with ESG and PRI is preferred.
  4. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Google platforms, and other online collaboration tools.

Work Experience

  1. Min. 3 years experience in the field of Banking & Finance, Investment Management, and Business Development.
  2. Strong capabilities in financial modeling, research and analysis, deal sourcing, structuring, and processing, fundraising as well as time management and organization with a problem-solving orientation.
  3. Ability to design, develop, implement, and manage projects and programs quickly and efficiently with outstanding monitoring and reporting skills.
