Internship Opportunity: Forages Intern
Job Description
The Tropical Forages program is seeking to recruit a Forages Intern to support the screening of spider-mite tolerance in a wide gene-bank accessions pool both in the field and in controlled conditions in the greenhouse in Mbita, Kisumu. He/she will work closely with program team members within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Screening of spider mite tolerance in a wide gene-bank accessions pool both in the field and in controlled conditions in the greenhouse
Aid in the establishment of plants both in the greenhouse and the field.
- Conduct field screening of a wide gene-bank accessions pool.
This will require field work (aid in the establishment of plants, maintenance, data collection and analysis)
- Conduct artificial greenhouse screening on field selected accessions using a previously developed assay. This will require rearing of the colony, establishment of plants to conduct assay, establishment of trial, data collection, image analysis and data analysis.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Agriculture or other closely related discipline
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, communication and planning skills
- Self-driven and attention to detail
- Eagerness to learn new skillsets
- Excellent interpersonal skills with advanced written and verbal communication in English language and a local dialect in Kenya.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment
- Ability to do multiple tasks under pressure and meet deadlines
- Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision, but also participate as a team member in the accomplishment of duties.
