Consultant Job: Documentary Producer for Climate Crisis in Africa

1. Introduction

The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a feminist pan- African, membership-based women’s rights organization, with more than 800 members across 50 countries in Africa. FEMNET aims to strengthen the voice, role and contribution of African women’s and girls’ rights organisations and individual activists in shaping policies and decisions that have impact on their lives and their work. The Network facilitates the sharing of information, experiences, ideas and strategies among African women’s NGOs and individual activists as a strategy for strengthening women’s capacity to participate effectively in the development processes at different levels in Africa. FEMNET primarily has played a lead role in strengthening the women’s movement in Africa and has ensured that African women’s and girls’ voices are amplified and influence decisions made at national, regional and global levels, which have direct and indirect impact on their lives. FEMNET ensures collaboration and partnership with like-minded people and organizations, innovation and cost efficiency in choice of activities to be implemented as well as documentation of best practices and experiences for knowledge and information sharing.

2. Background

Climate change in Africa has made the continent more susceptible to drought, famine, floods and other unprecedented conditions. In seeking to unpack this phenomenon, FEMNET has supported journalist in Africa to document climate crisis and its impact on gender equality. In seeking to summarizes the voice of African feminists, FEMNET seeks to temporarily recruit a documentary producer who will amalgamate the journalist stories into one documentary.

3. Objective

The central objective of this assignment is to produce informative, attractive and impactful short video documentaries featuring the work of African Feminists Climate Justice Journalists in Africa

4. Scope of Work

FEMNET Secretariat seeks to authoritatively advocate for climate justice by consolidating success stories and best practices applied in Africa into one documentary by analysing and editing African journalist documentaries on climate crisis in Africa with priority given to (but not restricted) Ethiopia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and South Africa. The documentary will highlight diverse experiences of African women and girls at the frontline of climate crisis.

5. Terms of Reference

The documentary producer will be expected deliver;

  • A creative and powerful story of climate realities centering African women and girls in all their diversities
  • Not less than 15 minutes video documentary featuring realities of one or more women/girls
  • Written stories accompanied with at least 5 still life and action photo (highest quality)

Required Qualification, Skills and Competencies

  • The Language: English and French are the two working languages of the FEMNET Secretariat. The assignment requires proficiency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese and French would be an added advantage.
  • The consultant should be acquainted to gender equality and women empowerment diction
  • The consultant should also demonstrate an international outlook, appreciating differences in values and learning from cultural diversity
  • Strong research skills and ability to analyse and synthesize relevant information and develop highly quality and compelling documentary.

6. Duration of the Task

The documentary will be generated from journalist stories form the aforementioned African countries (listed in the scope of the work). The documentary should be produced between 18th February 2022 to 28th of February, 2022.

7. Liaison, Coordination and Reporting

The producer will report to the Programs Manager and Communications Officer at FEMNET Secretariat

8. Ethical Considerations

FEMNET observes the highest stands of ethics in journalism and communication. Therefore, the consultant needs to observe and adhere to FEMNET’s Code of Conduct while delivering the task. The consultant should also take note that the approval of concept, script, and editorial revisions will ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion, and conformity with FEMNET secretariat expectations

9. Intellectual Property Rights

The consultant expressly assigns to FEMNET any copyright arising from the outputs produced while executing the service contract. The consultant may not use, reproduce, disseminate, or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate any output produced under the service contract without prior consent from FEMNET.

10. Selection of Consultant

The consultant shall be contracted by FEMNET. The contract will include Withholding Tax (WHT) deduction in line with laws of contracting where FEMNET is headquartered. A WHT certificate will be issued to the consultant. Payment will be done through bank transfer to the consultant bank account. FEMNET will not meet the costs of bank charges. Payment schedule will be agreed upon with the consultant upon successful selection. In case of team/firm applicants, a designated assignment contract manager will be the contact between FEMNET and the team and responsible for all deliverables.

11. Terms of Service

This is a non-staff contract and therefore the consultant is not entitled to insurance, medical cover or any other status or conditions as FEMNET staff.
