Brief overview

Project SHA is currently implementing 4 main Projects across Kenya with funding from the European Union and Irish Aid and targeting over 108,000 beneficiaries in rural communities. SHA works directly with smallholder farmers in 9 counties (Migori, Homabay, Siaya, Kisumu, Busia, Kilifi, Baringo, Nakuru and Nyandarua) and through agri-enterprises (BDS and SMEs) in over 25 counties (Nairobi, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu,Machakos, Makueni, Garissa, Loitoktok, Nyahururu, Embu, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, Kakamega, Tharakanithi, Taita taveta, Uasin Gishu, Busia, Homabay, Migori, Siaya, Narok, Nakuru and Baringo).Enhancing partnerships and collaborative efforts among stakeholders for drought response in Baringo County.

Objective of the Assignment

The short-term Communication Supportposition shall provide technical expertise to SHA Kenya Country Programmes that work directly with smallholder farmers in 9 counties mentioned above. She/he will provide support in visibility and knowledgemanagement, particularly in the development of information-education-communication (IEC) materials for different target groupsin the different projects/programmesincluding design, graphics, layout, editingand publication of IEC materials(audio, audio-visual and electronic print); and support in documentation of lessons learnt and case studies, events management and media linkages, while enhancing organization and donor visibility and branding of the various programmes through utilizationof socialmedia and other channels to promote the projects/programmes.

Specifically, the consultant will have a role to: –

  • Conceptualize, design, and develop IEC materials as required by the 3 focus projects with appropriate and relevant messages tailored for key stakeholders using various formats as appropriate such as text, graphics, imageries, info-graphics, video, printed materials, etc
  • Support planning and management of events including the 2021 Cassava Conference
  • Develop and consolidate strong media ties to promote widespread outreach to the public, development partners and other stakeholders.
  • Evolve successful goal-oriented communication plans with the relevant program/projects.
  • In liaison with project/program staff, develop content for the print, virtual and broadcast media including social networking websites, for the relevant projects.
  • Targetappropriate communication channels, dissemination methods and media such as video,print, web/online media, traditional media, and social media, among others, to effectively communicatekey messages to specific stakeholders.
  • Design a generic publication layout for the various projects/programmesfor use in future publications.
  • Develop astyle guide for all communications on Programmatic issues to ensure consistent formats for publications andcommunication productsin liaison with the SHA Kenya Communications Officer.
  • Document lessons learnt and case studiesfor sharing with projects/programmes implementing teams, donors, partners,and other stakeholders
  • .Assistwith other assignments as may be required.

Key Qualification, Experience and Skills

The consultant will work closely and have relationships with the SHA Kenya Communications Officer, SHA Head of Communications, SHA Country Director Kenya, Programme/Project Managers, Finance and Administration team, and Project Implementing partners.The consultant must have:

  • Preferably advanced degree in one or more of the following disciplines:Communications,Business marketing, English,Development Communication, OrganizationalCommunications,media technologies,Journalism, or other related discipline.
  • Experience working in a development/donor fundedprogrammespreferably funded by the European Union, Irish Aidis desired.
  • Experience working with SHA target sectors including agriculture, natural resources, nutrition,and WASH
  • Proven track record in strategic communications planning, advertising, messaging and IEC development among others
  • Must be able to function well in a team environment.
  • Must have the ability to effectively prioritize projects and multi-task.
  • Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural team and environment.
  • Excellent interpersonaland networking skills
  • Ability/willingness to travel to events and field as required by the various projects.
