Brief overview of Project
Self Help Africa, with funding from the European Union is currently implementing a four (4) year initiative under Common Program Framework (CPF) that operationalizes the Ending Drought Emergencies (EDE) strategy in Kenya that aims to Support Resilience for Sustainable Livelihoods through implementation of the project “Baringo Resilience Initiative, Nurturing Greater Opportunity” (BaRINGO). The Project is implemented in partnership with Farming Systems Kenya(FSK) and Sustainable Agricultural Information Initiative (SAII) with close collaboration with the County Government of Baringo and National Drought Management Authority as key stakeholders.
The Project’s objective is to promote secure and sustainable livelihoods amongst individual households that are prone to negative effects of drought in Baringo County, by enabling them to spread their risk through prevention of productive asset loss and diversification, thereby increasing their income. The pathway to change is premised on mitigating the effect of climate change and building community resilience. Key mitigating strategies in building community resilience focus on:
•Increasing agricultural productivity through provision of widely accessible inputs, extension services and gender inclusion for livestock and crop production,
•Increasing household nutrition through nutrition education on dietary diversity and nutrition sensitive agriculture,
•Improving land use management through water & soil conservation and regenerative agriculture techniques to ensure better protection/restoration and utilization of high, medium & low potential lands,
•Increasing markets and market access for agricultural produce through enterprise development initiatives and
•Enhancing partnerships and collaborative efforts among stakeholders for drought response in Baringo County.
Objective of the Assignment
The main objective of this consultancy is to support the implementation of the project.
Specifically, the consultant will have a role to: -The assistant will work under the KJ5 project being implemented in Baringo county to:
•Support the PC-Nutrition and Gender in the implementation of Nutrition component in the project area in liaison with the Project Manager,
•Support activity planning and implementation together with the project partners and project team in consultations with Project Manager and PC-Nutrition and Gender,
•Support and follow up with partners to ensure the Nutrition activities are implemented in accordance with the implementation strategy and work plan.
•When required, support field assessments and research activities including data collection and compilation of case studies specific to nutrition and WASH aspects for the project.
•Follow up on partners and trainers to ensure Nutrition training reports are submitted to SHA through the project Manager and PC-Nutrition and Gender.
•Collaborate with relevant Baringo County stakeholders as necessary including representing SHA in the county WASH and Nutrition working groups. Support other activities as requested.
Key Qualification, Experience and Skills
The consultant will work closely and have relationships with the Program Coordinator(PC), Nutrition and Gender, Head of Programs, Agriculture Officer, NRM officer and M & E Officer. The consultant must have:
•A degree in social sciences, community nutrition and dietetics or related fields
•At least 2 years’ experience in practice on Nutrition and community WASH programming
•Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment is desirable.
•Experience working in ASAL areas and resilience projects an added advantage.
•Experience working with partners desired In addition:
•He/ she should demonstrate motivated participation in the learning process.
•Knowledge on community WASH programming is an added advantage.
•Experience working collaboratively in a team structure in a multicultural environment is desirable.
•Ability to maintain high standards of personal integrity; establishing straightforward, productive relationships; treating all individuals with fairness and respect, demonstrating sensitivity for ethnic, cultural and gender differences.
•Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, data-base, email and utilization of the internet.
•Ability to initiate and manage change and to recognize and adjust to rapidly changing conditions / environments. Communication skills –effective communication is key in thisconsultancy.7.0LanguagesAll communications, tools and final report must be in English language
