Climate Manager – SHOFCO

SHOFCO is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Climate Manager to play a crucial role in the organization’s efforts to address climate change impacts in informal settlements. The Climate Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing climate change programs, integrating climate considerations into SHOFCO’s activities in liaison with internal and external stakeholders and working closely with the community to build resilience to climate risks in informal settlements. This work will include overseeing and supporting sub-grants and organizational strengthening support to CBO’s addressing climate change impacts.

Key Responsibilities.

2.1 Strategy Development:

  • Develop a comprehensive climate strategy for SHOFCO by coordinating technical inputs from external and internal stakeholders.
  • Outline a roadmap for the organization’s climate-related activities over the next 5 years that includes advocacy and resource mobilization.
  • Develop a long-term community engagement strategy on climate for informal settlement residents.
  • Integrate climate considerations into all aspects of SHOFCO’s operations, ensuring that climate resilience and adaptation measures are incorporated into existing and new programs.

2.2 Programme Implementation:

  • Identify and assess climate-related risks in Kibera and other informal settlements where SHOFCO operates to enhance preparedness.
  • Conduct participatory vulnerability assessments in pilot areas within Kibera.
  • Design and implement community based adaptation climate programs in coordination with other SHOFCO departments and community-based organization partners with an emphasis of enhancing social capital to build resilience.
  • Utilize SHOFCO’s youth network to raise awareness, mobilize community engagement about climate risks and promote the use of readily available climate information.
  • Advocate for climate finance, specifically targeted at informal settlements at both national and county government levels.
  • Monitor, report, and evaluate the impact of climate programs.
  • Coordination of all climate-related activities in SHOFCO in liaison with other SHOFCO departments.
  • Manage junior-level personnel as required.

Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills).

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
  • Bachelors Degree in any Environmental Science/Natural Science/Development Studies
  • Master’s degree in Environment, Climate Change, or Natural Resources Management, or comparable professional experience
  • Any training certification relevant to the role

Other Requirements (Unique/job specific)

  • Strong knowledge of climate change science, policy, and international climate agreements.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing climate-related programs and strategies in NGOs at national or international level.
  • Experience working with community-based organizations in the context of sub-grants and/or capacity building.
  • Experience in urban or informal settlements is an added advantage.
  • Substantial field experience and the use of monitoring and evaluation approaches.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and advocacy skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, and as part of a wider network, is essential.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to respect and work well in a dynamic and multicultural environment i.e. with people from different backgrounds and disciplines.
