Vacancy for an Ecologist at CABI

The Ecologist is expected to grow and expand CABI’s portfolio in Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) Management and related areas such as land restoration and land use planning. CABI has a long-standing expertise in IAP management, especially using biological control. CABI is currently running several projects in this area in Eastern Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania) with national and local partner organizations. The new role would support the implementation of existing projects, including the supervision of Junior staff, and in parallel actively develop new proposals and funding streams. The researcher will work closely with existing CABI staff across CABI Centres and with country partners. It is expected that research results will be published in international peer reviewed journals.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Either individually, or as part of the project team, grow existing projects and develop new projects including the preparation, writing and submission of research proposals;
  • In cooperation with Head of Strategic Partnerships Africa and other CABI staff, acquire new donors and funding opportunities in the area of IAP management, restoration and/or land use planning;
  • Either individually, or as part of the project team, lead, conduct and support projects;
  • Carry out internal capacity building in IAP management through training, mentoring, learning by doing etc.
  • Develop and support gender aspects in project work;
  • Publish the outcomes in peer reviewed journals, in particular focusing on the impact of CABI’s work;
  • Ensure adherence to CABI policies and procedures.

ABOUT YOU:

  • PhD degree in Applied Ecology, preferentially IAP management, restoration ecology, soil health, land use planning or related subject areas with 3-4 years of relevant post-doctoral experience;
  • Good understanding of the socio-economic aspects of IAP management;
  • Experience in inter- or transdisciplinary project work and/or integrated landscape management would be desirable
  • Proven experience in project development and obtaining funds;
  • Proven experience in successful project planning and management, both technically and financially;
  • Good knowledge of quantitative (and qualitative) research methods and statistical analyses;
  • Strong scientific publication record;
  • Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Fluency in one other language, such as Swahili, would be a benefit.
