Media and Information Literacy Researchers Required

Position Summary

This position is open to youth between the ages of 18- 35 years old and will primarily be based in Nairobi metropolitan throughout the project implementation cycle. They will be reporting to the MEAL Officer and will assist in the project’s research.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in partnership building and stakeholder engagements.
  • Conducting Intersectional Rapid Gender Analysis and writing the report
  • Support in conducting Focus Group Discussions
  • Provide feedback on the desk review/ take part in writing of the desk review report and incorporate review from other studies.
  • Understand key issues, get inputs, feedback and perspectives of the end users regarding the media literacy handbook.
  • Participate in the workshops to share their findings and provide feedback and recommendations for the handbook.
  • Take part in the youth media literacy week to create awareness on the MIL Handbook and also train youths on the use of the handbook during the training sessions.
  • Support planning and delivery of all the project workshops and training sessions
  • Under the supervision of the Implementation Research, support in data collection activities; including virtual and physical data collection and phone interviews and recording of the interviews.
  • Support the conducting of monthly surveys (collecting data on the familiarity of fact checking, critical thinking, online safety, social media verification, civic engagement and political participation and quality assessment of online information).
  • Under the guidance of the IR Officer, assist in conducting key informant interviews (data collection on informed perspectives of experts and local leaders on media literacy in relation to civic participation).
  • Take part in questionnaire co-developing/ testing that will be used as surveys for the participants.
  • Support data cleaning and analysis (ensure data is well organized, sorted and stored according to TYC’s policy guidelines and standards).
  • Contribute significantly to project reporting, including writing and compiling reports for the Implementation Research Officer.
  • Represent The Youth Café and the project publicly.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Expertise in collecting, organizing and analyzing opinions and data to solve problems, explore issues and predict trends.
  • Be in possession of advanced analytical skills and eager to learn new things.
  • Be proactive, persistent and detail oriented.
  • Excellent report writing skills and a great team player.
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems using innovative solutions.
  • Being able to think visually and develop original research agendas.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal and cross-cultural skills required.
  • Spoken and written proficiency in English and Kiswahili.
