Consultant Job: Generation Equality Campaign Consultant, FEMNET

1. Background About FEMNET

The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a pan-African, feminist and membership-based network based in Nairobi, Kenya with over 800 individual and institutional members across 50 African countries and in the diaspora. Founded in 1988, FEMNET exists to facilitate and coordinate the sharing of experiences, information, and strategies for human rights promotion among feminists, activists and women’s rights organizations as a strategy for collective organizing; policy influencing & advocacy; strategic communication; capacity strengthening as well as feminist solidarity and movement building. FEMNET envisions a society where African women and girls thrive in dignity and well-being, free from patriarchal and neoliberal oppression and injustices.

Over the years, FEMNET has strategically positioned herself as a conveyor, organizer and facilitator of critical dialogues around women’s economic justice and rights; transformative women’s leadership; sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); climate justice and natural resource governance as well as, ending all forms of violence and harmful/ discriminatory practices against women and girls. FEMNET continues to be intentional in influencing decisions made at national, regional and global levels, constantly ensuring African women voices are amplified and their needs, priorities and aspirations are prioritized in key policy dialogues and outcomes that have direct and indirect impact on their lives. FEMNET mobilizes African women to hold their States accountable to women’s rights and gender equality commitments.

2. Purpose of Assignment

In 2021, FEMNET as a co-leader of the Generation Equality Forum (GEF) Action Coalition on Economic Justice and Rights has been contributing to the co-creation of the global 5-year action journey to accelerate gender equality by 2026 launched in July 2021. FEMNET has also been mobilizing African women and girls in all their diversity to participate and engage in the GEF processes including the GEF Mexico and GEF Paris. For FEMNET, the Generation Equality Forum and the Action Coalitions, is a unique opportunity for African women and girls to scale up the conversations on the achievement of women’s and girls’ rights and galvanize practical actions from all stakeholders (governments, UN entities, INGOs, foundations, private sector, young people and CSOs) towards creating and sustaining equal, just and transformative societies.

Between February 2022 and September 2022, FEMNET is keen to engage the services of an experienced campaign consultant on a full-time basis to work closely with the communication team to design and roll-out a one-year online campaign whose core objectives are:-

  • To increase awareness amongst women and girls on the GEF Action Coalition commitments made by African leaders.
  • To track and report on the progress being made on implementing the GEF commitments at country level.
  • To appeal to African policymakers to move from rhetoric to actual implementation and accountability of existing commitments made on women’s and girls’ rights.

Specifically, the Generation Equality Campaigns Consultant will:-

  • Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of the project interventions and reporting in line with the projects workplan.
  • Develop and share a plan of how to execute a digital campaign working closely with a team of creative agency experts to develop an engaging brand and compelling content.
  • Map out key target groups and identify creative strategies to keep them engaged in dynamic, interactive and meaningful ways – target groups include members of FEMNET, women’s rights organizations (national, regional and global), CSOs, media, policymakers, development partners, private sector, academicians, young people associations, religious and cultural institutions etc.;
  • Develop advocacy policy papers, advocacy briefs and news articles on topical issues around the focus of the GEF action coalitions.
  • Coordinate the hosting of consultative sessions with African women, teenagers and young women during the GEF related convening, including managing the communications and logistics tasks prior to, during and post events.
  • Organize virtual meetings as a platform for sharing updates and information on Generation Equality Forums and Action Coalitions, including diverse strategies/tactics for African women and girls to contribute and influence commitments and critical actions.
  • Work closely with the monitoring and evaluation team to track and report on the project and the communications team to generate information for the website and social media platforms.
  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

3. Key Deliverables

  • A comprehensive one-year digital campaign strategy
  • Branded campaign materials
  • At least 3 advocacy/ knowledge products (policy papers, advocacy briefs and news articles) on topical issues around the focus of the GEF action coalitions.
  • Reports from the consultative sessions and virtual meetings.
  • Monthly content/ updates on GEF for sharing on website/ e-bulletin
  • Provide regular updates and reviews to management on status of the campaign – including online reach analysis, lessons learnt and recommendations.
  • Compile and submit monthly activity reports and end of assignment status report to FEMNET’s Head of Communication.

4. Liaison, Coordination and Reporting

The Generation Equality Campaign Consultant will work closely with FEMNET’s Communication Team and other thematic/project leads. S/he will report to the Communications and Information Lead

5. Required Qualification, Skills and Competencies

 The Consultant is expected to have the following minimum qualification and experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing women’s rights and gender equality.
  • Experience in feminist analysis and advocating for women’s rights, preferably at national, regional and global levels.
  • Knowledge and experience in project implementation, monitoring, evaluation and producing results-focused reporting and highly organized with good attention to detail.
  • Proven experience/expertise in conducting trainings, including training of trainers.
  • Strong writing, analytical and research skills and ability to apply them in inter-disciplinary contexts and innovative problem-solving ability.
  • Experience with advocacy and policy dialogue on a high political level.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills and fluency in spoken and written English. Communicates sensitively, effectively and creatively across different constituencies.
  • Ability to break down complex information into actionable points.
  • Capability to deliver quality work and within tight deadlines.

 Other relevant attributes:

  • Approachable with strong interpersonal & listening skills together with the ability to collaborate with teams and relevant stakeholders.
  • Highly motivated, result oriented and self-driven person able to adopt FEMNET’s policies, with understanding of due process, financial transparency, accountability, integrity, strong ethical attitude.

6. Duration of Assignment

The assignment will take place virtually, for a period of (8) months (February 2022 to September 2022). The consultant may be based in any of the African countries.

7. Selection of Consultant

The consultant shall be contracted by FEMNET. The contract will include Withholding Tax (WHT) deduction in line with laws of contracting where FEMNET is headquartered. A WHT certificate will be issued to the consultant. Payment will be done through bank transfer to the consultant bank account. FEMNET will not meet the costs of bank charges. Payment schedule will be agreed upon with the consultant upon successful selection. In case of team/firm applicants, a designated assignment contract manager (lead consultant) will be the contact between FEMNET and the team and responsible for all deliverables.

8. Intellectual Property Rights

The consultant expressly assigns to FEMNET any copyright arising from the outputs produced while executing the service contract. The consultant may not use, reproduce, disseminate, or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate any output produced under the service contract without prior consent from FEMNET.

9. Terms of Service

This is a non-staff contract and therefore the consultant is not entitled to insurance, medical cover or any other status or conditions as a full time staff.
