Project Officer Vacancy

Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa (NAYA) is looking for a full time Project Officer for its She Leads project. The position will be based in Kwale County, Kenya, with frequent travel within the County. This position is open to Kenyan citizens only.

The She Leads Program Officer shall be a young woman of less than 30 years of age who is an advocate of girls’ and women’s rights, with extensive experience working with girls and young women in areas of advocacy and capacity strengthening.

Working under the Program Manager, the Project Officer will oversee and support the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the She Leads project implementation in line with defined objectives and quality.

Roles, Duties and Responsibilities

Project Implementation and management

  • Support the effective and efficient implementation of She Leads project activities in Kwale County
  • Support and regular follow up Project Associates to deliver on project plans taking into account efficiency and quality (ensuring the project is executed timely, on scope and as per the budget)
  • Working in collaboration with the Program Manager, ensure quality and timely reporting and documentation of project activities including preparation of quarterly/yearly project progress reports in line with Terre des Hommes Netherlands reporting guidelines.
  • Build and strengthen strategic partnerships with community leaders, decision makers, policy makers, civil society entities and the relevant government ministries and departments in Kwale County
  • Support formation or growth and strengthening of GYW-led social movements for girls´ rights and gender equality through capacity strengthening, resourcing, funding, technical support in Kwale County.
  • Monitor the context in Kwale County with regard to the development and humanitarian situation and child protection concerns and provide recommendations to the Program Manager and others as appropriate for decision making.

Project planning, monitoring and knowledge management

  • Coordinate the development of project  work plans for timely implementation
  • Provide regular project implementation updates and consolidation of activity reports
  • Monitor and maintain up to date risk register throughout the project cycle to help in effective management and mitigation of risks
  • Consolidate, package and disseminate project best practices, success stories, case studies
  • Monitoring and safeguarding meaningful engagement of girl advocates in the implementation and management of the project i.e. development of advocacy plans, and communication materials

Educational Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in human rights, political science, international development, gender studies or other social sciences,
  • A relevant Masters’ Degree is an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in program implementation, lobby & advocacy, children’s rights, meaningful youth participation and/or similar areas, preferably with a civil society/non-governmental organization.
  • A good understanding of the National and County government policy and legislative context.
  • Documented experience in embedding a gender transformative approach and familiarity with youth participation approaches is essential.
  • Strong skills in partnership with proven experience in networking with and capacity building of local Civil Society Organizations and relevant government departments in Kenya; preferably Kwale County. Strong knowledge of and experience in project management cycle, including the use of Theory of Change and other M&E systems particularly Outcome Harvesting methodology is an asset
  • Experience in communications will be an added advantage.

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of the links between gender equality, girls/children’s rights and NGO development/humanitarian programming practice.
  • Demonstrated understanding of gender equality and girls’ rights issues in both development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Experience in implementing high quality projects with demonstrated impact on improving gender equality or girls’ and young women empowerment.
  • Knowledge on Child Protection and Safeguarding is a must

 Skills

  • Advocacy and campaigning skills especially on gender equality, girls/children’s rights.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and able to communicate complex concepts around gender equality and empowerment clearly and concisely
  • Strong project management and coordination skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Kiswahili required.
  • Conversation skills in local community languages is an added advantage.
  • Facilitation and management of group dynamics
