Call for Applications for Postgraduate Training Scholarship in Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics for 2021/2022 Academic Year

Background
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), Kenya, Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development (TICH), Kenya and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for a postgraduate training scholarship to undertake a competency-based Master’s Degree Program. The scholarship will be supported through a project on
“Strengthening Capacity for Epidemics Preparedness and Response in sub-Saharan Africa (SCEPRESSA)” funded by the Second European and Developing Countries and Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP2) program supported by the European Union. This 24 months, full-time, Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics degree program will be taken at JKUAT Main Campus in Kenya and is designed to train health professionals to have in-depth knowledge and skills for enhanced disease surveillance and research with specific focus on infectious
diseases of importance in sub-Saharan Africa. The program will involve coursework, examination, fieldwork and thesis.

Eligibility for the Scholarship

  • Be a national of a country in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Be in early to mid-career (maximum 40 years) based in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Minimum two (2) years working experience in a Public Health related field
  • Applicant be an employee of a Government or an Institution in sub-Saharan Africa where he/she will be expected to continue to work for a minimum of two years after completion of the course
  • Knowledge in basic computer packages and proficiency in English
  • Must meet admission requirements for JKUAT, Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics: Be holder of an undergraduate degree in a health related field and an upper second class honors or its equivalent where applicable
  • Women, are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Be ready to take up the scholarship in October 2021

Scholarship Package
The project will provide full scholarships which will cover the following:

  • Return economy air fare for international students
  • Tuition fees
  • Basic medical care services as registered students
  • Monthly stipend to cover living expenses
  • Support for and field work expenses and research project

  • Application fee is KSH. 1,500.00 paid in cash or at Absa Bank AC/NO 077-5001216 for Kenyan applicants and USD 15 for international applicants paid to Absa Bank AC/NO: 0775001216, Swift Code: BARCKENX, Sort Code: 03077
  • Attach the following documents:
  1. A letter not longer than 500 words detailing motivation for applying for the course and how the program fits with your overall career goals as well the contribution this training will make in preparing you to respond to pandemics in Africa and beyond
  2. A letter of support from your current supervisor confirming the duration of employment in the organization and the willingness of the organization to release you from duty during the period of the scholarship if successful. In addition, the letter of support should confirm that the applicant will retain the position for at least two years upon completion of the program.
  3. Two academic referee recommendations indicating mobile telephone contact and email address
  4. Certified copies of academic transcripts and certificates (from university and high school).
  5. Copy of Passport (personal details page) or National Identification (I.D) card
  6. Three (3) clear colored passport size photograph (2cmx2cm)
  7. Copy of application fee payment receipt (for Kenyan applicants) or bank deposit slip (for international applicants)
