Position: Medical Officer
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation Medical Research International (HJFMRI) provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to global medical research programs. HJFMRI in collaboration with The Walter Reed Project, HIV Program-Kericho carries out HIV / AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research, and with PEPFAR supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in South Rift Valley. HJFMRI / Walter Reed Project- Kericho is seeking to fill the above position.
Job Summary:
The incumbent is a working professional who is a medical doctor and associate investigator in some of the research studies at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC). The staff provides clinical care to study participants, assists in development of protocols at the site in addition to implementing them as stipulated in the protocols to ensure adherence to the set requirements by sponsors, applicable laws, policies and ethical considerations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Associate Investigator Duties
1. Assist with development, planning and implementation of research protocols
2. Conduct research protocols in accordance with applicable IRB requirements, Kenyan laws, and Federal regulations to maintain the protection of the rights and welfare of study participants.
3. Recruitment and selection of participants for research in accordance with the protocol requirements.
4. Ensure that informed consent is obtained from all participants before research participation and appropriately documented in accordance with IRB policies, and confidentiality is maintained.
5. Assist in ensuring that staff receive the required training to conduct research protocols.
6. Provide Serious Adverse Events management and report to the sponsor and IRBs in a timely manner.
7. Assist prepare continuing review reports at an interval established by the IRBs, and a study closure report when all research activities are completed.
II. Medical Officer Duties.
1. Enrollment of eligible participants.
2. Obtaining patients demographics, vital signs and medical/ medication history.
3. Perform physical examination, and diagnostic procedures, such as lumbar puncture
4. Prescription of Study Treatment, and other concomitant medications.
5. Requesting and review of laboratory results.
6. Treatment modification, drug substitution and discontinuation.
7. Assessment, Management and reporting of adverse events.
8. Filling of source documents, completion and review of CRFs.
9. Scheduling appointment of participants.
10. Phlebotomy and collection of sample specimens.
11. Management of in-patients and participating in routine ward rounds.
12.Attending to emergencies, being on call during weekends and holidays, and after working hours.
13. Implementation of Infection Control policies and procedures.
14. Participate in Continuous Medical Education (CMEs) and PEPFAR patient management retreats.
15.Any other relevant duties assigned by the supervisor.
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
i. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a recognized institution.
ii. Registration and licensure with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
iii. At least one year post internship work experience in a busy hospital and/or clinical research.
iv. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English and Kiswahili
v. Good understanding and experience on HIV/AIDS, TB care and treatment and other opportunistic infections.
vi. Team player who demonstrates excellent planning, organization and interpersonal skills.
vii. Training on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection and certification will be an added advantage.
viii. Competence in computer operations
Terms of Employment: 1 year renewable contract. The first three months will be probation period.
