Self Help Africa (SHA)-Kenya is a dynamic international organization based in Nairobi with its headquarters in Ireland and operations in African countries across East, Southern and West Africa. Self Help Africa in Kenya works with smallholder farmers to move them from subsistence to commercialization through a range of projects – from supporting those in extreme poverty, to assisting enterprise development and business partnerships. SHA works with smallholder farmers, farmer groups and associations across the country, including in the arid and semi-arid areas to address food security and nutrition challenges, and link farmers to markets through a farming as a business approach.

Strengthening the Competitiveness of the Cassava Value Chain in Kenya is a 5-year programme funded by the European Union. It is a collaboration between Self Help Africa as the lead-applicant and co-applicants: Rafiki Microfinance Bank, Ugunja Community Resource Centre (UCRC), Ustadi Foundation and Tru Trade. This project responds to identified needs, challenges and opportunities within the cassava value chain in Kenya, leveraging the expertise of the private sector and together delivering an integrated package of activities to increase the competitiveness of the cassava value chain.

The programme overarching objective is to increase food and nutrition security, employment and income among 20,000 smallholder-farming households (at least 60% women) in six Counties (Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Siaya, Busia and Kilifi). Specifically,  the  programme  intends  to  increase  income  levels  amongst  target households through increased cassava production for both subsistence and trade; reduce  the  hunger  gap  amongst  target  households  by  promoting  cassava,  a drought-tolerant  crop;  create  5,600  net  equivalent  jobs  amongst  the  Farmer Business Groups supported by the programme; increase the decision-making power of female farmers through an integrated gender sensitive approach and improve on the  dietary  diversity  of  cassava-producing  households  through  the  promotion  of intercropping with legumes and pulses, cassava products and nutrition education.
