The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit Short-Term Consultant Data Professionals and Interns to support data driven projects at the Center. Successful candidates will be engaged on assignments for periods not exceeding six (6) months.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the development, review and translation of research tools;
- Participate in the pre-testing of data collection platforms / databases;
- Data cleaning including doing all required consistency checks for project data;
- Document project data sets according to the Center’s guidelines on data documentation, archiving and sharing;
- Extract data and prepare analytical files;
- Support harmonization and standardization of data sets including development of Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETLs);
- Perform basic and advanced statistical analysis of data;
- Participate in scientific writing;
- Write technical reports on data issues; and
- Participate in development of standard operating procedures for data use at the Center.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- A bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science, data systems development, machine learning, AI, health informatics, mathematical modeling or equivalent.
- Interns should be recently graduated or at advanced stages in their study programs (BSc, MSc) with minimal work experience.
- Consultants should have demonstrable and extensive experience in their preferred data areas of interest.
- High level quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data).
- Knowledge of programming, analytical and visualization tools such as STATA, R, Tableau, Python, PowerBi, etc. is essential.
- Knowledge of geographical information system tools such as QGIS, ArcGIs, GeoCLIM, etc. is desirable.
- Working knowledge in data management platforms such as Open Data Kit (ODK), REDCap, SurveyCTO, Nesstar, KoboCollect, etc is desirable.
