Organizational Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is ministry of the Society of Jesus, incorporated as an international non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organization was founded in November 1980 and now has a presence in over 56 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs. The main services provided are in the field of education, reconciliation, livelihood activities and psychosocial support. Currently, more than 724,000 individuals are direct beneficiaries of JRS projects. In Kenya, JRS has two projects: an urban refugee project in Nairobi focusing on Education and Livelihoods and field project in Kakuma Refugee Camp focusing on Education, Integrated psychosocial inclusive Education programme in Centres and Safe Shelters.

JRS Kenya is seeking to recruit Kenyan nationals for the following position to be based in Kakuma.

Job Function

Reporting to the Principal, the Secondary School Teachers will teach and oversee school academic progress for learners, support professional development of refugee teachers, assess learners to track and report on learning outcomes, provide psychosocial support, and ensure inclusivity in all school activities.

Duties and responsibilities of Secondary School Teachers

  • Teach one set of subject combination advertised
  • Develop teaching aids for effective learning
  • Ensure implementation of the prescribed secondary education curriculum
  • Conduct continuous assessment tests and terminal exams
  • Responsible for the proper management of classroom resources
  • Develop students’ interests in co-curricular activities
  • Cultivate parent / teacher relationships

Requirements for appointment

  • A degree in Education
  • 3 years’ experience teaching in a secondary school
  • Registered with the Teachers Service Commission
  • Mastery of office software (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point)
  • Proven performance as a secondary school teacher with outstanding results
  • Able and willing to live, work, travel in fast-paced and insecure environment adhering to strict security guidelines.
  • Be of good moral standing with no record of disciplinary action
  • Have strong commitment and self-driven
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and endurance
  • Experience working with a refugee/ emergency context is desired.
  • Previous experience with a faith-based NGO is a significant asset.

Personal Attributes for the above post

  • Ability to manage and use e-learning/digital devices for teaching and learning, prepare and upload learner content on devices, data collection and analysis.
  • Experience of working in refugee schools or with refugee community in the camp or urban set up.
  • Exemplary guidance and counselling skills, and experience in provision of psychosocial support
  • Passionate for inclusive education and girl’s education program
  • Ability to tolerate cultural, educational, and religious diversity in the workplace.

Terms and Conditions

Contract is for One year, renewable, with an initial probationary period of Three months. The JRS remuneration policy is aligned with the JRS ethos to offer effective and professional services and at the same time express solidarity with the people served.
